Five islands, one park, a village that read the sea.
Mu Ko Surin became Thailand’s 30th national park on 9 July 1981 and was expanded on 6 July 2007. The group sits about 60 kilometres off Phang Nga in the Andaman Sea: Koh Surin Nua, Koh Surin Tai and three smaller islands. Three-quarters of the park is water. The Moken — Chao Lay — rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami as one village, Ao Bon Yai, on Koh Surin Tai. Their laboon story, the giant wave that follows a sea that runs away, took the whole community uphill that morning. This desk is for the park, the reef and that village.
